Boston, like much of the surrounding areas, has a humid climate that’s influenced by the ocean. The summers are rainy, humid, and anywhere from warm to hot, with mild spring and fall weather. Since Boston has an abundance of diverse subsections, it’s sometimes called the City of Neighborhoods.
There are four airports that serve the Boston area, with Boston Logan International Airport being the main choice. It’s located in East Boston and is the largest airport in the New England region. The others are used for general aviation, to the west is Hanscom Field, Norwood Memorial Airport to the south, and Beverly Municipal Airport to the north. Interstate 90, which runs along the Massachusetts Turnpike, ends in Boston on the east coast. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority or MBTA is not only the fourth busiest in the country, it’s also the oldest underground rapid transit system in all the Americas. Nearly one-third of the population uses public transit to commute, making it the fifth highest in the country.
Some of the most prestigious higher education institutions are located in Boston. The first is Harvard University. The nation’s oldest institute, its main location is in Cambridge with campuses through the city. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, better known as MIT, is a private research university also located in Cambridge. Tufts University is also a private research university located in Medford. The majority of other 100 colleges and universities in Boston are private.
Boston is one of four cities in the US to have won championships in all four of its major sports. You can watch the Celtics in the NBA, Red Sox in the MLB, Patriots in the NFL, and Bruins in the NHL. There’s also a MLS team, the New England Revolution, and Women’s Professional Soccer team the Boston Breakers, and a United Women’s Lacrosse League team, the Boston Storm.
Boston is a very historic area, with sites for the Boston Tea Party, The Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Boston Massacre. You can also find the oldest public park in the US, Boston Common. It’s located near the Financial District and Beacon Hill and is adjacent to the Boston Public Garden. Franklin Park is home to the Franklin Park Zoo and is the city’s largest park. These are part of the Emerald Necklace, a group of parks designed to encircle the city.
