Just slightly over 40 miles south of Seattle is the city of Lakewood. It’s the second largest city in Pierce County, near the Port of Seattle, and is considered part of the Seattle Metropolitan Area. This has made Lakewood a perfect location for one of our car shipping affiliates, able to serve the whole metro.
The climate for the area is typical for the northwest part of the country. Winters are usually cool and wet, and summers are mild but dry. Within the city limits are many lakes, most likely contributing to the climate. The five largest lakes in the area are Lake Steilacoom, Lake Louise, Waughop Lake, American Lake, and Gravelly Lake. There are also many small creeks that flow through Lakewood, with some that drain into the Puget Sound. Chambers Creek is the largest and flows from Lake Steilacoom to Chambers Bay.
The closest airport is the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport located in the nearby town of SeaTac. Nicknamed the Sea-Tac Airport, it provides commercial air service to destinations throughout the world. For general aviation, cargo, and testing of Boeing airliners, there’s also Boeing Field closer to downtown Seattle. The Port of Seattle is a major area for trade with Asia and ships headed to Alaska, including car carrier ships we utilize. Another major part of transportation for the area is the Washington State Ferries, which have 20 terminals served by ten routes around the Puget Sound. It’s considered a part of the state highway system as well since it carries both passengers and automobiles.
Lakewood is the host community for Joint Base Lewis-McChord which acts as both an Air Force base and Army installation. Camp Murray also borders the city and is headquarters for the Washington Military Department including the Washington Air National Guard and Washington Army National Guard.
Fort Steilacoom, founded by the US Army in 1849 but was decommissioned in 1868. It now serves as Western State Hospital and four of the remaining cottages serve as a living history museum. Other historical places in the area include Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and the Museum of History and Industry. You can find numerous other museums throughout the Seattle metro as well. Other great local attractions are the Seattle Great Wheel, one of the largest ferris wheels in the US, Woodland Park Zoo, the Seattle Aquarium, and the Seattle Underground Tour.
Local residents can also catch many professional sports games. You can watch basketball with the Seattle Storm, baseball with the Seattle Mariners, soccer with the Seattle Reign or Sounders, or football with the Seattle Seahawks. For outdoor recreation, American Lake has two public parks with beaches and a marina. Another area is Chambers Creek, which is popular for fishing, walking, and skimboarding. Areas near the Cascade and Olympic Mountains are great for hiking and skiing. Many people also sail and kayak in the Puget Sound.
