This Is Why You Shouldn’t Let Your College Student Drive Cross Country This Fall

There’s a better way to get them to campus safely

College classes will be starting before you know it, and whether it’s their first year or senior year, sending your child off to college is hard. If you’re sending them across the country, it can make it even more worrisome. Will they have everything they need, like healthy food? Will be they able to get to the store if they need something like cold medicine? What if they need to work a job or are able to find a great internship, will they have reliable transportation?
Although your student may need their vehicle this year, you don’t want them to drive it all that way, especially with if it’s loaded down. You also don’t want or truly have time to drive all that way yourself. So what’s a better, safer, and a huge time-saving way to get them the vehicle they need? Having it shipped to them. Shipping a car is fairly hassle-free when you work with the right auto transport company.

Keep Your Student Safe

Although people travel across the country safely most of the time, why risk delays or damages? If your student would have to travel across a desert or plains area, it can be many miles between towns and gas stations. If they are to breakdown, will they be able to get help? Will they remember to check the gas gauge when they are in town to make sure they don’t run out? If your student is going from one climate to another, it can also be harder on their vehicle. For instance, in the cooler climates like the Midwest, your tires are usually good to go as long as you keep them well inflated. If your student drives from a cooler climate to the warmer southern climate, those tires could be in for a shock. Warmer and drier climates are harder on tires and other rubber parts of the car like hoses. Different climates call for different maintenance on their vehicle. A cross country drive also puts unnecessary wear and tear on a vehicle, too. Long distance driving can also be part of the danger for your student as well. It’s been shown that driving drowsy can be almost as dangerous as driving intoxicated. In fact, drowsy driving has estimated to be a factor in 20% of fatal crashes. This is because they are more likely to be slower to react, not able to make safe decisions, and more distracted.

Other Items They Pack

Every fall your student packs up their belongings to head back. Does it feel like it gets to be more and more each year? It’s a big hassle to move all their items back and forth. One nice benefit of shipping a car is being able to make their movables easier to move by packing some in the car. EAS allows its customers to pack up to 100lbs in either the trunk or cargo area of their vehicle. This is a great way to save on postage and luggage fees for their trip back to campus. You can send items that aren’t immediately needed or valuable/breakable such as clothes, decor, and excess. We don’t recommend trying to ship laptops, TVs, or anything else valuable or delicate. These can possibly be damaged in transport and aren’t covered by the carrier’s insurance. They also won’t be inventoried – carriers only inspect the exterior of the vehicle. Items that can never be packed under any circumstances are prescription medicine or other drugs, firearms, alcohol, or any type of perishable food items.

Look for the Discounts & Guarantees

A great place to start is to check with their school. Some schools have discount programs for students, including with car shipping companies. Executive Auto Shippers happily provides discounts for students at University of Michigan, University of Iowa, and University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA), with others soon to be added to the list. If you’re a member of the military or DOD, active or retired, don’t forget to ask about that discount as well. EAS also gives discounts to first responders and law enforcement. Your employer might also have discounts available for you to use, too. Check with your HR department for what’s available to you. Another way we help ease the anxiety of car shipping is through our guarantees. Not only do we guarantee the price won’t change once you’ve booked the shipping order, but if there are delays that would cause your student’s vehicle to be later than a normal transit time, we have a Rental Car Guarantee as well.

A Few More Tips

Once you’ve decided to ship a car to your student, make sure you ask questions to get the best understanding and have a plan in place. When you call to set up the shipment, make sure to let the customer service representative know your student’s class and work schedule, discuss options for a drop off location if the campus isn’t truck-friendly, and figure out how payment will need to take place. Even though CSRs try to work with schedules the best they can, don’t make the window of time that your student’s available too small.
Most carriers have trailers that hold 10 cars and can’t fit on side streets, especially if there are low hanging trees or are narrow. A couple options to try are:

  1. Nearby big box stores like Wal-Mart or Target
  2. Nearby shopping centers or malls

As for payment, EAS only charges the deposit after the vehicle has been picked up with the rest due at delivery. If you aren’t sure how to handle payment at delivery, here are a few options:

  1. Pay the driver the full amount upfront or send the payment with your student
  2. Place the money in an envelope hidden in the car (most carriers only accept cash or other certified funds). Let your student know at delivery where that is.
  3. Send a money order to your student right before the vehicle will be delivered or overnight the certified funds

As your student prepares to return to campus for another year, help them return safely and with all that they’ll need. With the right auto shippers, you’ll not only remove some of the stress and worry, but save yourself and your student time as well. Check out our FAQ page if you still have questions about how to ship a car, or give one of our customer service representatives a call today. Here’s to a successful school year!
